J. Flanagan 1908 Oil Painting of a New England Bay
A collector in the 1970s, purchased this painting from an estate in Massachutes and brought it to Tennessee. This oil on canvas is signed F. J. Flanagan, 08 in the lower right and other than heavy surface crazing with some rough cracking to the surface is apparantly in all original and good condition. The frame is the original, and the artist even experimented painting on the back side of the canvas. The scene is probably fall and the rust colored ground covering has a blue inlet or bay area with trees in the background. The scene is windswept and almost impressionistic. The image is almost haunting in beauty, no people, just the forces of nature. Mr. Flanagan is listed as being in the Marblehead, Mass., as well as Boston region and exhibited at the Boston Art Club and the Penn Academy of Fine Art as well as the Corcoran Gallery. He is shown as being active from 1897-1927.
