The bow form of this pin is especially appealing when thinking of Victorian ladies wearing this on the top button area of a blouse as a man would wear a tie. The scrolling on the edges is applied and there is one small separation in the shell motif above the stone that in no way would cause any problem in wearing. The scrolling of the Victorian motif is especially welcome to the viewer and this pin could easily be used with a scarf as well as conventional wearing. This would be especially pretty to be worn in a photograph.
Shylock appears with a curved knife in his right hand and a document scroll in his left. The background windows and chair are skillfully executed and the dark green trim is in excellent condition. There is one very tiny flake on the base that would be unnoticeable to the eye from the front but is visible on the back just barely.
Augustus Mitchell Map of Kansas Colorado and Nebraska Engraved by W. H. Gamble of Philadelphia- $175
The Augustus Mitchell series of maps shows detailed descriptions of each region showing railroads lakes and the borders were engraved as a flowering vine. The maps show a lack of modern growth.
This well-executed floral design is actually against a greener background than the photo shows. The shading goes from dark green at the top to a matching dark green on the base. The piece is quite visual and is painted on milk glass.
Charles Paul Gruppe was a well known artist who worked both in Europe, America and other places. These watercolors are signed Gruppe and one is noted to be Munich. Both are landscapes with trees, water and vague skylines in the background. These are simply pretty. The late Victorian frames that are the originals for the watercolors are just unbelievable with a natural theme of flowers, cones and petals of flowers along with vines in the background. This is one fine pair of frames and watercolors. The details are subtle and these are really powerful images. Remember, this is a pair.
This multi colored fowl has lots of different plumage shown in the head and upper body. The fowl is shown on a stone wall with a landscape in the background. The colors are very realistic. This fowl exudes confidence.
Cloisonne remains today one of collectors favorites and this vase certainly does exemplify some well executed details of cherry blossoms on a new budding tree. The vivid yellow base area against the blue fish scale design makes for an attractive appearance and the feeling is one of spring and rebirth. The condition is excellent and the only surface inclusions seem to be from firing with tiny pin explosions that result when the emanels are fired to the high temperature. No chips or cracking in the surface. The appearance of this is very colorful and light in feeling.
This porcelain figure of dancers and musicians was purchased by a Houston Texas collector from a sale of items belonging to the American gangster Alphonse Capone. The author of the latest Capone biography refers to this type of item as Gangster Kitch and stated that Mr. Capone liked to class up his girlfriends residences. He apparently owned several of these and distributed them to friends of his. The former owner from Texas did not have a receipt from the Capone Estate but there is no reason to disbelieve the story. Several interested parties have responded and tried to get an authentication from the Chicago Historical Society about Capone Sale Effects and there was no specific catalogue issued for any of the liquidations of his personal property. Apparantly during the mid to late 1960s 3 sales were conducted of items belonging to Mr. Capone but with no direct reference to him.
Victorians loved natural themes, and birds were a major part of their collecting interests. It is hard to say with this broken egg container having edges to resemble cracked shells if this was for serving hard boiled eggs or if it was a clever master salt for a table. Actually, it could be used for either and the exterior of the egg has veins and the top has a cracked or broken pattern molded into the glass.
